Plans

I know of no plans for the garden.  Please let me know if there are any.

I did hear a rumor that the boulders are unstable, and that they might need to be replaced by a concrete wall.  I've seen no evidence of instability.  If the boulders were replaced, it would be sad, because most of the plants in the garden are either among the boulders, or above them (and so would be obliterated during reconstruction).

My suggestions

  • Improve the drainage.  Water collects after rain in two low spots.  These should be connected by ditches to the drain.  Verify that the drain is working.
  • The garden once had two basins (see photos) excavated that served to drain the wet areas.  The plants they contained have been trampled.  Replant and then place a barrier to protect these rain gardens.
  • Plant a shade-tolerant ground cover on the bottom level, but protect the plants from trampling.  Pennsylvania sedge or wild ginger are options.
  • Revive the outdoor classroom.
  • There's evidence--trampling--that children are getting into the start of the upper level.  This area should be fenced off.  There once was a fence.
